The Key to Motivation: Plan big and take small steps

One of the number one stumbling blocks to everyone who wants more or wants something different in their life – and doesn’t have it yet – is motivation.  It can be a challenge to find the drive within yourself to just do what you know needs to be done.  Luckily, there are two huge things you can do to help.

First, plan big.

Make your plans grand and attractive enough that you know you will really want them.  Envision the results, and really feel it.  While small plans lead to small results, large plans lead to inspiration and movement.

Second, take small steps.

Break your big plan down into little bite-sized pieces.  Then break them down into little digestible pieces.  Really.  When you have very small tasks to accomplish, it’s easier to get started.  Just tell yourself to just do the task for 15 minutes.  Then it’s way easier to take the most challenging step: the first.

Motivating yourself to take the first step is a huge part

of creating confidence.

For example, if your plan is to get in shape and lose 15 pounds of fat by July 1st, break it down.  So, work out 4 times a week.  Break it down.  Do a short resistance and cardio routine.  It may be that this is too daunting at first.  Convince yourself to put on your workout gear.  Then convince yourself to get in the car.  Then to drive to the gym.  Then convince yourself to do one set.  And so on…

When you have a SMART plan, and you break it into very small pieces, it’s much less overwhelming.  And when you’re not overwhelmed, there’s a lot less holding you back and a lot more pushing you forward – motivating you to succeed.  Remember, you’re worth it!
