Keep a Healthy Brain

As we age, our brains actually shrink and neural pathways decrease.  To keep our minds sharp as time progresses, there are a few key things to keep in mind.  Dr. Isadore Rosenfeld, Fox News contributor has this advice:

To keep your mind in shape, don’t bother with so-called brain-training games like crosswords and Sudoku.  These train your brain to be great at brain-training games.  Instead, stay active in your life, physically and socially.

What great advice!  The key to keeping your brain healthy is to keep your body and your heart in the right place.  Going for walks, visiting with friends and family, and keeping your social life active are the keys to keeping your mind sharp.

I think this speaks to a more holistic type of health.  It’s important, of course, to keep your body in good shape and to do what you can for your mind.  It’s also extremely important to surround yourself with a support system.  Humans are social creatures, and I know from personal experience that good friends and family can help get you through the real tough stuff.

It’s a challenge at times to keep your social network doing great, and it seems to slip down the priority list at times.  I look to my grandmother for how to really succeed at this.  My grandma, at age 84, still meets once or twice a year with a group of friends from her high school.  That is so amazing to me!  I think it’s beautiful to have friends and keep them like that.

I love my friends.  People are absolutely the most important part of my life, and I make friends and get close to people easily.  However, in the past, I’ve fallen out of touch with people as well.  The beautiful thing is that it’s really easy to keep in touch these days.

If you’d like to get back in touch with people, begin a routine.  Contact one old friend a day.  I can tell you from experience that it’s an extremely rewarding experience to re-connect with people.  You’ve grown, they’ve grown, and it’s amazing that you can find new things in common!

Be a social superstar, and keep your mind in great shape!

Love,
CarolAnn
